I’m Emma Slack-Jørgensen. I grew up in the suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark and now reside in New York City. After studying (and crying over) economics at McGill, I hope to teach young people about the economy in a way that makes sense to us, not just the Goldman Sachs Interns©. I write stories about caviar, floating food forests, minimalism, and Trump’s hatred of Scandinavia, all through the lens of the economy. You can read my CV here.
I am currently the Managing Editor of Dough, an independent print magazine that seeks to escape the complex jargon of traditional economic literature. We write for the culturally fluent and economically uninformed. Those who don’t understand what makes up GDP or how to do their taxes. Through stories about the dying dollar slice or Hailey Bieber as an economic indicator we want our readers to better understand the economic structures that underline our day-to-days. In 2022 and 2023 Dough won The New School’s MA Project Grant fund earning $1500 for our business plan, mission, and dedication to making economics more accessible. Our recent issue, Recession, was launched on June 13, 2024 at Yours Sincerely.
Over the years, I’ve been published in notable magazines, such as the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies’ print publication, FARSIGHT, The New School’s Public Seminar, and, of course, Dough Magazine. In April, I presented my research on urban food deserts at NYU’s (Un)Making conference. You can view the slide deck here.
